Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel  was born on 19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971. Her full name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. She was a French fashion designer.  She stopped designing during the World War because she didn't think that it was a time for designing.   She is the only person ever in the couture field to be in Time magazine’s Top 100 Most Important People.  The current Chanel CEO is Karl Lagerfield.  Finally, Coco Chanel was one of the most important couture designers in history, I think.  She was a strong and important woman and rose to fame by working hard.  Out of all the designers that I am about to tell you about, she is probably one of my favorite and even beyond just these.  She was truly amazing.

Guccio Gucci
He was the original designer of Gucci.  Guccio was an Italian Business man. He was born in 1881 in Italy. The vision to make it big in the country had enlightened a spark in Guccio Gucci who made his strength as a craftsman his biggest asset. Though he had a humble beginning but it earned him a lot of reputation and made the brand a globally recognized one. He started the House of Gucci as a small family owned leather saddlery shop in 1906. Being an excellent craftsman he stated selling leather bag to the horsemen in 1920.  Manufacturing high-quality products he soon started gaining reputation for his work and started hiring people to work in his small organization. It is one of the most famous and prestigious brands known globally. It was one of the premier manufacturing leather good suppliers.
It also holds a Guinness Book of World Record for one of its apparel collection called "Genius Jeans" which were priced at $3,134. The organization has also won many awards.
  • VH1/Vogue Best New Designer (1995)
  • Designer of the Year (1996)
  • CFDA International Designer of the Year (1996)
  • Elle Style Awards' Style Icon Award (2000)
  • British GQ International Man of the Year Award (2000)
  • Time's Best Fashion Designer (2001)
  • GQ Designer of the Year (2001)
  • First Annual Fashion Design Achievement Award at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum's National Design Awards (2003)
The brand also occupied 46th position in the Business Week magazine which featured Top 100 Brands chart in 2007.
As you can see Gucci had many accomplishments and worked hard to get there.  He was a family man while being one of the biggest designers ever.

Paul Poiret was born on April 20th 1879 in Paris, France and live until April 30th 1944.  He was a French fashion designer. His contributions to twentieth-century fashion have been likened to Picasso's contributions to twentieth-century art.
Poiret established his own house in 1903, and made his name with the controversial kimono coat. He designed flamboyant window displays and threw legendary parties to draw attention to his work; his instinct for marketing and branding was unmatched by any previous designer.  Like Chanel he also was around during the time of the World Was.  His house of fashion went bankrupt during this time though.  Overall he was an elaborate designer and had many designs in his time.

Girogio Armani
He was born on July 1th 1934 in Piacenza, Italy.  He was an Italian fashion designer, particularly noted for his menswear. He is known today for his clean, tailored lines. He attended medical school for two years, dabbled in photography, fulfilled his military obligations in 1957, then worked in a prestigious department store, La Rinascente, as a window dresser. He joined Nino Cerruti as a designer from 1961 to 1970. He formed his company, Armani, in 1975, and by 2001 was acclaimed as the most successful designer to come out of Italy, with an annual turnover of $1.6 billion and a personal fortune of $5.3 billion. As you can see he was "destined" to be a designer. For he went through many things to get to the point where he was in his later life.

Muiccia Prada

Miuccia Prada was born in 1949. She entered the family business 1978 and soon revolutionized the appearance of its products. Her interest in unusual fabrics led to the distinctive trademark of Prada products: the surprising combination of materials. There are usually two discoveries to be made when dealing with Prada products: First, the surprise to see the use of a specific material in an unusual context and in consequence, the astonishment how good it fits the purpose. In 1989, she introduced women's wear with instant success, men's wear followed equally successful in 1995. Prada is said to be the most prominent example of a new form of inward-directed luxury. While in the eighties luxury was explicitly displayed, today an understated luxury is sought, only recognizable by insiders. Miuccia Prada, who is entirely in charge of the companies creative decisions, says she bases her decisions mostly on intuition. She is reported to be overly fussy about each detail of her design.
It can happen that each product has to be changed over and over in order to come closest to Miucci Prada's initial idea. Her husband Patrizio Bertelli is the business-man behind Miuccia Prada. He is responsible for the commercial side of the products and the retail strategy. A weird fact about her is that even though she was a fashion designer, she also has a Ph.D. in Political Science.  Overall, she was a creative and inspiring woman, who was important in the past of fashion.

Christian Dior

Christian Dior was born on January 21st 1905 in Granville, Manche, a seaside town on the cost of France.  He was an influential French fashion designer, best known as the founder of one of the world's top fashion houses, also called Christian Dior.   His family, whose fortune was derived from the manufacture of fertilizer, had hopes he would become a diplomat, but Dior only wished to be involved in mostly fashion, but sketching as well. To make money, he sold his fashion sketches outside for about 10 cents each. After leaving school he received money from his father so that in 1928 he could open a small art gallery, where he sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso.
After a family financial disaster that resulted in his father losing his business, Dior was forced to close the gallery. From the 1930s to the 1940s he worked with Robert Piguet until being called up for military service. In 1942, having left the Army, Dior joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong where he and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers. For the duration of World War II, Christian Dior dressed the wives of the Nazi officers and French collaborators. On 16 December 1946 Dior founded his own fashion house, backed by Marcel Boussac. Dior's designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric. He was a master at creating shapes and silhouettes; Dior is quoted as saying "I have designed flower women." His look employed fabrics lined predominantly with percale, boned, bustier-style bodices, hip padding, wasp-waisted corsets and petticoats that made his dresses flare out from the waist, giving his models a very curvaceous form. The hem of the skirt was very flattering on the calves and ankles, creating a beautiful silhouette. Initially, women protested because his designs covered up their legs, which they had been unused to because of the previous limitations on fabric. There was also some backlash to Dior's designs form due to the amount of fabrics used in a single dress or suit. Opposition ceased as the wartime shortages ended. The "New look" revolutionized women's dress and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world after World War ll.

Madeleine Vionett

Madeleine Vionnet was born on June 22, 1876.  She was a French fashion designer.  She was called the Queen of the bias cut and the architect among dressmakers.  She is best known today for her elegant Grecian style dresses and for introducing the bias cut to the fashion world. The House of Vionnet opened in 1912 at 222, Rue de Rivoli. Madeleine provided one third of the financing while the remaining investment was supplied by on of her clients, Germaine Lilas, Henri's Lillas' daughter.  In 1914, when World War I started, Madeleine Vionnet closed the house and set off to visit Rome. In 1919, the house reopened after the war. Mr. Martinez de Hoz, an Argentinian, joined Mr. Lillas as main shareholder of the house. During the same period, Thayaht, a futurist artist, created Vionnet's logo and started designing textiles, clothing and jewelry for the house.  Personally, she is my favorite designer in this presentation.

Mary Quant

Mary Quant was born on February 11th 1934 in London.  She was a British fashion designer who was instrumental in the mod fashion movement and one of the designers who took credit for inventing the miniskirt and hot pants. Born to Welsh parents, Quant went to Blackheath High School then studied illustration at Goldsmiths College before taking a career with a couture milliner. She is also famed for her work on pop art in fashion.  As you can see, probably 90% of girls our age, are grateful of her (she created the miniskirt)

Jacques Fath

Jacques Fath was born on September 6th in Paris, France.  He was a French fashion designer who was considered one of the three dominant influences on postwar haute couture, the others being Christian Dior and Pierre Blamain.  He was known for being very elegant and had very clean cuts.

ESSAY FOR PROJECT

During this project I learned about a lot of things that didn't even involved fashion.  I learned new ways to communicate with people for information.  Also, I understood more how projects work and how to do the project process in general.  Another benefit was that I still learned a lot about previous fashion designers, my favorite was Christian Dior.  Overall, I was inspired by some of things I learned.

Firstly, I want to say that this project did have good purpose, I mainly wanted to do it because I thought it would be fun and I'd like it.  Though, when I was done I got so much more out of it.  I learned that I could email big companies and get a response back!  Surprising as it may seem I now know to shoot higher then just Pewaukee.

About the project process, I now know how to go threw with it and what to do.  I enjoyed working on my own, but still having the advisers help.  Also, other students helped me understand what to do, too.  I like working in Academy to finish projects and get help.

Finally, I picked this project because I really like fashion.  You may think, oh wow.  Natalie, obsessed with fashion?  No.  Well, it's not fashion itself, but what it inspires me to do.  Think, how would the world look with no color, no shapes, and no ...life?  I could promise you that it would be very boring.  Doing this project opened my eyes to what inspired these very talented designers to be where they got in life.  In short I was just highly fascinated with doing this project.

Self Reflection

I think that I did a really good job on this project.  The only thing I regret is doing a Photo Story.  During this project i think that I learned a lot and that I worked hard to find my information.  To summarize I think that gave 99.99%.

GOALS:

  1. Choose a different application
  2. Have more resources
  3. Work more on it at home
