Hanging Upside Down

If a person hangs with their head below the rest of their body for ten minutes, they could pass out.  To most people this isn't important whatsoever, though to acrobats, trapeze artists, and to other circus performers, this is very important information.  The circus began as Circus Maximus in Rome in the sixth century B.C.    The circus that we automatically think of with large troupes of people, all traveling together performing to several different audiences comes from the eighteenth century English circus.  Performers have used information like this to entertain thousands of viewers that have seated themselves in the Coliseum long before the circus we now know today.  It's been the introducing of different information that has allowed the circus to grow. Research shows that there's a relationship from affects on hanging upside down to your body.  This has an effect on the real world since that some people make a living just doing things that require hanging upside down every day.

The circus we know today has its roots in Ancient Rome, from Circus Maximus. Circus Maximus was the very first circus which started in the sixth century B.C. in Rome. It had a few acts such as acrobats, tightrope walkers, and horsemen, but the most famous of all was the chariot races.  Circus Maximus was very entertaining to people and surprisingly had free admission.  Though it had a reason, the government tried to keep the citizens minds off the struggles of the country and entertained them with silly acts and performances.  All these acts, though, were just the starting point of what turned into the English circus in the eighteenth century.  This circus is the what we know today with traveling performers and several vans going to the village green during fairs and markets, entertaining large groups of audiences.  Some of the acts we still have today are juggling and trapeze artists.  Out of all the three circuses I would have rather seen Circus Maximus because I think that it would be the coolest thing to go and see chariot races.

Trapeze artists play a big part in all three circuses, though as graceful and easy as it may look, hanging from bars and ropes is a very difficult task.  The performers do a lot of research based on how to hang more flawless and graceful, though tight and poised at the same time.  They do several ab exercises before they perform and would never think of eating right before they go on stage.  Just imagine eating a meal right before hanging upside down for ten or fifteen minutes.  The reason you shouldn't eat is because it can give you cramps and an upset stomach after a while, in which would take away the gracefulness. And that is the last thing that you would want to happen if you were performing in the Coliseum that seats 250,000 people!  All in all, as goofy and easy as being an acrobat may seem it isn't all a piece of cake.

Trapeze artists do have some hard work on their hands, but I wanted to see, in detail, how hard it was just hanging on monkey bars, since being a trapeze artist and hanging on monkey bars involve hanging upside down.  Having people hanging on monkey bars may sound childish, but I found much more than even I was expecting.  Such as, a great majority of the people I tested said something hurt.  Now, doesn’t that sound silly?  Hanging upside down and having something hurt, what could possibly hurt? Most testers said that either their head or their legs hurt.  Their head hurt because all the blood was rushing to their head and they got a head ache.  Then, if their legs hurt it was from trying to hold their entire body with their thighs.  Another repeating outcome I had happen was being dizzy or unbalanced once they came down.  That happened because they hadn’t used their calves so it was hard to stand still.  In conclusion the results I found may have been slightly inaccurate because, since it was winter, it was cold outside and most of the people were tired and wanted to come down.

Now can you answer the question, why when someone hangs upside down for ten minutes they pass out?  The answer to that question being, all the blood rushes to your head and you can get dizzy and can fall off.  Also, that the circus started long before just a few hundred years ago.   It started about a thousand years ago, and is still around today.  Though the circus, that the present day circus, is based off of, was from just a few hundred years ago.  Finally, information on hanging upside down, might not be useful to you, but could be useful to someone in the circus.

GOALS FOR NEXT PROJECT:
1. Remember essay
2. Have more resources
3. Communicate more

Narrative:On this project I think that I did an OK job, but with some minor flaws.  I think that I did good on my research and the information I found and that I had an orginized presentation.  The minor flaws were that I wish that I'd had more contacts and resources for my information.  If I did then I think that I could have expanded what I found.  Overall, out of a hundred I'd give myself an eighty-five.
